[P039] Space Environments of Unmagnetized or Weakly Magnetized Solar System Bodies and the Effects of Space Weather on These Systems

Session Description:

The ionospheres and magnetospheres of weakly magnetized bodies with substantial atmospheres (e.g. Mars, Venus, Titan, Pluto and comets) are subject to disturbances due to solar activities, interplanetary conditions, or parent magnetospheric environments (e.g. solar flares, coronal mass ejections and solar energetic particles), sharing similarities with their magnetized counterparts but with scientifically important differences. As an integral part of planetary atmospheres, ionospheres are tightly coupled with the neutral atmosphere, exosphere and surrounding plasma environment, possessing rich compositional, density, and temperature structures. The interaction among neutral and charged components affects atmospheric loss, neutral winds, photochemistry, and energy balance within ionospheres. This session invites abstracts concerning remote and in-situ data analysis, modeling studies, comparative studies, instrumentation and mission concepts for weakly magnetized solar system bodies. Topics such as dayside and nightside ionospheric characteristics and variability, ion-neutral coupling, and responses of the ionized and neutral regimes to transient space weather events are especially encouraged.

Dear Colleagues,
 
on behalf of my fellow conveners, I  would like to solicit the submission of contributions to the "Geophysical Fluid Dynamics" (GFD) session at the "Fall Meeting 2023" of the American Geophysical Union, to be held in San Francisco (U.S.), 11-15 Dec. 2023. This is a reference session for many scientists affiliated to the Programme National Soleil-Terre (PNST)  and as for the previous years we expect numerous abstracts from its community. Please note that AGU and the Nonlinear Geophysics (NG) section - which is the reference section for the GFD session - support the involvement of students and early career scientists in the activities of the Fall Meeting through the AGU honors program, poster awards and dedicated travel grants.

Session Description:

The purpose of this session is to gather scientists interested in all aspects of the fluid mechanics of the Earth and planets (including interiors, oceans, atmospheres and outer space planetary environments) to foster exchanges between fundamental fluid/plasma and geophysics communities. Thanks to the evolution of high-performance computing, the progress in laboratory experiments, and the high resolutions achieved by modern in-situ and remote sensing instruments, fundamental research on neutral and magnetized flows has become indispensable to advance knowledge in geosciences. Main topics of this session are instabilities, energy cascades, mixing as well all the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of geophysical flows, such as waves, turbulence, phase transitions and the coupling with magnetic fields. Studies of rotating, stratified, helical, convecting and/or conductive fluids and plasmas are welcome. Contributions based on state of the art observations, numerical simulations, machine learning techniques, theoretical models and laboratory experiments will be all well received.
