COSPAR award nominations (deadline 30 novembre 2021)

Annonce transmise par Brigitte Schmieder (KUL & LESIA)

The purpose of this message is to invite nominations for awards to be presented at the 44th COSPAR Scientific Assembly to be held in Athens, Greece, 16 – 24 July 2022.

You are authorized to nominate for all awards and medals listed on the attached form. In addition to your nominations, you are expected to distribute nomination materials to members of your National Committee, Scientific Union, Scientific Commission or research colleagues, requesting that they propose candidates for the awards and prepare the required nomination materials indicated below.  The latter nominations require your endorsement, either by signing the nomination form, or through a confirming email.

In March 2019, COSPAR adopted a set of Principles, several of which are pertinent to COSPAR Awards:

• COSPAR promotes scientific research in space at an international level, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information, and opinions, and provides a forum, open to all scientists.

• COSPAR requires that presentations at its meetings and publications in its journals are the result of scientific research that was conducted with the highest ethical standards.

• COSPAR promotes inclusiveness, diversity and gender equity in all of its activities, and does not tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment.

• COSPAR encourages meaningful roles in all activities for younger scientists, who are the future of international space research.

These principles should be adhered to in all award nominations, which must be submitted using the attached form, and accompanied by the requested items. We ask that you please pay particular attention to the need for improvement of gender balance in the COSPAR Awards, so when considering equally qualified candidates to nominate, be sure to favor women candidates. Slates of nominees where gender balance is clearly insufficient run the risk of being questioned by the Award Committee and the COSPAR governance. Enclosures should not exceed the length indicated in the attached information sheet. Nominations must reach the COSPAR Secretariat by 30 November 2021.

Names of previous recipients are attached and available on the web through the following page: https://cosparhq.cnes.fr/awards.  The attached nomination form is also available through the same web page and upon request electronically from the COSPAR Secretariat.

A COSPAR award offers an excellent opportunity to acknowledge to the assembled international space science community the outstanding accomplishments of a space scientist. I very much encourage you to nominate those scientists whom you consider to be worthy of such acknowledgement.
