The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen conducts fundamental research in the field of solar system physics. With its approximately 300 staff members, it is one of the leading institutes in the field of solar physics and planetary research. In particular, the institute is involved in numerous international space missions.
 

The Institute invites applications for Postdoctoral Positions on SO/PHI data reduction and exploitation.

The solar department at the MPS is the PI institute of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager on the Solar Orbiter (SO/PHI) and provides outstanding opportunities for data analysis and calibration activities, as well as related theoretical and numerical work. SO/PHI provides unique opportunities for new science, with solar observations taken from outside the Sun-Earth line, and is now in the early science phase with novel data being accessible for the first time. The research fields covered by the team already include the solar magnetic field, physics of the photosphere, solar activity, solar coronal heating, as well as wave physics, helioseismology, and solar variability.
 

Your tasks
• Support the PHI team in the preparation of observations for science exploitation.
• Pursue research related to the current research of the department with prime focus on topics to be addressed with the SO/PHI instrument. New science topics focused on SO/PHI opportunities but not yet present in our team’s expertise are also warmly welcomed.
• Support the SO/PHI operations planning.
 

You should have
• PhD (or soon to be expected PhD) in solar physics or a closely related field.
• An outstanding research record.
• Relevant experience in one or more of solar observations, data analysis, reduction of spectropolarimetric or similar observations, optical solar instrumentation.

• Remuneration according to grade E13 of the TVöD pay scale of the German civil services (annual gross salary depends on experience, typically it is currently 61.884 € and will go up to 67.946 € from March 2024).
