Abstract

Multi-site GPS observations from more than 2500 ground-based GPS stations were used to analyze the dynamics of the ionospheric irregularities in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres during various space weather events. Few types of the GPS data processing were implemented to analyze the dynamics of the high-latitude ionospheric irregularities produced by the recent severe geomagnetic storms. It was constructed the diurnal and hourly ROTI maps, hourly TEC maps as well as derived a high-resolution ROT variability for selected GPS station chains. With ROTI index maps it was determined the irregularities oval border and averaging parameter – semi-hemisphere fluctuation index. We analyze the dependence of the GPS-detected ionospheric irregularities on the auroral activity. The development and intensity of the high-latitude irregularities during this geomagnetic storm reveal a high correlation with the auroral hemispheric power and auroral electrojet indices. The indices and maps, based on analysis of TEC rapid variation can be effective and very perspective indicator of the presence of phase fluctuations and plasma irregularities caused this fluctuations in the high and mid-latitude ionosphere when space weather parameters are changed dramatically.
